First-Time Cruiser Tips

Back to Travel Tips

Never cruised before? Don't worry — cruising is one of the most beginner-friendly vacation styles out there. Here's everything first-timers need to know before they set sail.

Welcome to the world of cruising! Here's what every first-timer should know. Embarkation day: arrive at the port early (11am–noon) to beat the crowds and start enjoying the ship before it sails. Your cabin may not be ready until 1–2pm, but the pool, buffet, and most public areas are open. Onboard spending: most ships are cashless — you'll use your room key card for everything. Set a daily budget and check your account regularly via the ship's app or guest services. Dining: main dining room meals are included; specialty restaurants cost extra. Make dining reservations early — popular times fill up fast. Shore excursions: you can book through the cruise line (more expensive but guaranteed to return to the ship) or independently (better value but plan carefully). Seasickness: modern ships are remarkably stable, but if you're concerned, bring motion sickness medication and request a midship, lower-deck cabin. Most importantly: relax and enjoy. The ship will take care of you. That's the whole point.
